The Life and Music of Sir Edward Elgar

One of the most famous British composers, Sir Edward Elgar was born in Lower Broadheath, near Worcester, on 2 June 1857 and died on 23 February 1934.

Among his best known compositions are orchestral works including the 'Enigma Variations', Pomp and Circumstance Marches, concertos for violin and cello, and two symphonies. He also composed choral works including 'The Dream of Gerontius' and numerous songs.

Uniquely amongst main stream composers, Elgar also composed a piece for carillon entitled 'Memorial Chimes' which was written specifically for the inauguration of Loughborough War Memorial Carillon. This piece and some of the other compositions mentioned are included in this programme which will be played 4 days before the anniversary of his birth 159 years ago.
